What August job gains usually look like

Examples use releases available September 5, 2026. Dates and survey coverage are stated beside the findings.

August brings recurring changes in school-related employment. Comparing unadjusted and seasonally adjusted payroll estimates helps distinguish the raw calendar pattern from changes after accounting for expected seasonality.

Two views of the same month

Across the seven Augusts from 2019 through 2025, the median total nonfarm payroll gain was 396,000 jobs before seasonal adjustment and 232,000 after adjustment. Unadjusted employment rose in all seven years; seasonally adjusted employment rose in six. These medians are calculated from historical estimates available September 5, 2026. Sources: unadjusted total payrolls and seasonally adjusted total payrolls.

Seasonal adjustment models recurring patterns. It does not make every remaining movement an underlying economic trend, or prove that an unusual school start was handled correctly.

Education is prominent in the unadjusted pattern

For August 2019–2025, median unadjusted changes were:

Industry Median net change in jobs
Government +372,000
Local government education +362,100
State government education +75,400
Private education and health services +108,000

Sources: government, local government education, state government education, and private education and health services.

Government includes its education components, so these rows overlap. Do not add them together. Component medians also need not add to the median of a total.

How much do pandemic years matter?

Excluding 2020 and 2021 leaves five August observations: 2019 and 2022–2025. The median falls to 328,000 unadjusted jobs and 218,000 seasonally adjusted jobs. This is a sensitivity check, not an official adjustment. The small number of years limits how confidently a median can describe a “typical” August. Sources: unadjusted payrolls and adjusted payrolls.

What did the jobs “turn out to be”?

That can mean either the industries contributing to a month's gain or how the initial estimate was later revised. These analyses answer the industry question using one publication vintage. They cannot calculate release-to-release revisions without the earlier releases.

Detailed women's payroll observations can also lag total employment. In the September 5, 2026 snapshot, August women's figures for restaurants and local government education are unavailable even though total employment figures exist. A parent industry's women's share cannot fill that gap. Sources: restaurant women's employment and local government education women's employment.
